A native of Calgary, Terry graduated from the University of Calgary in 1981, where he obtained a B.A. (political science/economics) before moving to Edmonton in 1982 to attend law school at the University of Alberta, from which he graduated in 1985.

Since his admission to the Alberta bar in 1987, Terry has been primarily engaged in civil practice.
